The Best Midfield in the World?

Will Adam be lured to Anfield by his fellow Scot?

A few years back, Liverpool’s supporters called the four members in the center of the club’s formation “The Best Midfield in the World.” Since Momo Sissoko, Xabi Alonso, Gerrard and Mascherano lined up next to each other, the boys in Red have struggled in trying to mimic this success.

Gerrard may not be as young as he used to be, but if he is 100 percent, he could be extremely dangerous. What about the rest of the line?

Lucas Leiva, Raul Meireles, Maxi Rodriguez, Jay Spearing and Jonjo Shelvey are left from last campaign. Christian Poulsen and Joe Cole are presumed to be leaving, and so far, young Jordan Henderson has joined the group. Obviously, Henderson has a lot of talent, and could be a huge addition to this team. He is certainly a piece of the puzzle, and helps with depth immediately. He would even get a decent amount of starts if the Scousers do not sign anymore midfielders.

Maxi was rumored to be going back to Argentina, which would be terrible, given the fact that he is a huge reason for the ascension up the table toward the end of last season. Losing him would hurt, badly.

But this is why Liverpool needs to get more midfielders. If this club plans on being a force again it is imperative to make a couple more moves to solidify the center of the pitch. Luckily, it seems to be a matter of time before Kenny, Comolli and Henry pull the line up and pull a couple more out of the transfer waters.

Maxi Rodriguez may return to play for his boyhood club, Newell's Old Boys.

Charlie Adam showed time and time again how talented he was last season with Blackpool. Liverpool’s supporters as well as everyone else in England know this. His transfer is expected sooner than later, but the club must act on this. Adam could become an absolute staple in the midfield for the next few years.

The other player that is desperately needed in this transfer window is Stewart Downing. He is a class winger and he could really make the midfield complete. If he is sent to Anfield (rumored to be entering a transfer request at Villa) this would be huge, as it would take much of the load off of Dirk Kuyt, Maxi (if he’s here) and Glen Johnson down the sides of the pitch.

Remember, the more high-quality talent the club can retain, the better. It is nicer to have a logjam in the midfield than the black hole that the club needed to keep throwing reserve players in.

That’s how Liverpool used to be. When they had the best midfield in the world.

Now to just get a backup goalkeeper, a few defenders and another striker. Should be easy…
