Liverpool On Verge Of Advancing

Liverpool plays Steaua Bucharest later today in Group K of Europa League. Advancing past the group stage couldn’t be simpler.

Advance with a draw.

Finish first in the group with a win.

Hodgson is resting some players in addition to the slew of Reds already riding the pine through injury. Daniel Agger, Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard are out. Fernando Torres, Maxi Rodriguez, Glen Johnson, Paul Konchesky Dirk Kuyt and Raul Meireles are all out too.

Cole returns to the fray against Bucharest. Let's hope he doesn't get injured again.

According to Sky Sports, the players that Hodgson is adding to the squad is Nathan Ecclestone, Dani Pacheco, Danny Wilson, Jack Robinson and John Flanagan.

To say the least, the squad is thin for this match.

I could see the lineup looking like this: Reina, Wilson, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Kelly, Aurelio, Cole, Lucas, Poulsen, Shelvey, Jovanovic, Ngog.

It would be nice to see Jova get 90 minutes, though Hodgson’s unexplained distaste for him makes me thing that it won’t happen. If Pacheco also can come on to get about 30 minutes work, it would be nice. These are both pipe dreams, methinks.

With Cole back, this is a perfect match for him to work on getting back into the rhythm of the squad. Liverpool need Joe Cole. Liverpool need him to be 100% and playing his best. Hopefully viewers will be seeing that by the new year.

Liverpool won the last match against Bucharest 4-1, but that was in Anfield. I won’t try to predict the score, as that didn’t turn out well against Spurs. Liverpool still should be strong enough to pull off a draw.

It will be a bright spot that Scousers can hold onto for a little while. Plus, a win will put the majority of the concentration back on the league for a while. That is really what Liverpool need.
