Vancouver And Portland Starting To Take Shape

MLS supporters are starting to get an idea of what the two new clubs look like. MLS had their expansion draft today, and there looks to be some certain post-draft shakeups.

McCarty will be a huge boost to the DC United ranks

Portland’s draft list: Dax McCarty (DAL), Eric Brunner (CLB), Adam Moffat (CLB), Anthony Wallace (COL), David Horst (RSL), Robbie Findley (RSL), Peter Lowry (CHI), Jonathan Bornstein (CHV), Jordan Graye (DC), Arturo Alvarez (SJ)

Vancouver’s draft list: Sanna Nyassi (SEA), Atiba Harris (DAL), Nathan Sturgis (SEA), Shea Salinas (PHI), Alan Gordon (CHV), O’Brien White (TOR), Alejandro Moreno (PHI), Joe Cannon (SJ), Jonathan Leathers (KC), John Thorrington (CHI)

But it surely wasn’t finished when the draft ended. Portland made an amazingly poor decision in TRADING McCarty to DC United. In return the Timbers will get Rodney Wallace, a young defender. The Timbers sent some cash for a fourth-round MLS Draft Pick. Overall? Awful, awful move for Portland.

Portland made some questionable moves in the draft, but it could pay off for them. They now hold the rights to Bornstein and Findley. Both players would be great additions to the club, but Bornstein is playing in Mexico, and Findley plans to look to Europe for work. If either came back, great for Portland. But they probably won’t, at least in the forseeable future.

Vancouver had a decent draft, picking up Harris and Nyassi, who were projected to be taken early. That is until Nyassi was just traded to Colorado for an international roster slot….Sheesh. There is a reason they call it the silly season, and the MLS is certainly on its’ own in wacky roster moves.

It is still so hard to tell what these teams will look like on opening day, but the talent bases are there. Usually, clubs struggle when they are new to the league, so it won’t be surprising if these two do that, as well.

The winner of the 2010 MLS Expansion Draft?
