Ali Gerba is Silly Good

The Montreal Impact won the first leg of the USSF Division 2 quarterfinal against the Austin Aztex.

Or, should I say, Ali Gerba won the first leg of the USSF Division 2 quarterfinal against the Austin Aztex. At least that’s what it looked like.

Gerba scored two goals, the first one, an absolute screamer. This gives the Gulls a huge advantage heading into the second leg in Austin Saturday night. It is his ninth in thirteen matches, which leads the team. Not bad for only playing since July.

Ali Gerba has scored nine goals in 13 matches for the Impact.

The Gulls have played two matches against the Aztex before the playoffs, losing the first match (also the first match of the season) by a score of 2-0. Montreal came back and defeated Austin in the last match of the season by the same score.

This advantage will be huge for Montreal going into the second leg, as Austin is quite dangerous, and to be completely frank, looked much better than Montreal for long stretches of the match. If they can sneak one more in down in Texas, the Gulls should be flying into the next round.

And to spread the love to the rest of the playoff teams, here is the First Leg finals of matches so far:

NSC Minnesota Stars 0-0 Carolina RailHawks

Rochester Rhinos 0-2 P.R. Islanders

Portland Timbers 1-2 Vancouver Whitecaps Match starting at 1030 EST.

Montreal heads to Austin for a match on Saturday. They will play at House Park at 8:30 EST. The winner will play either Carolina or Minnesota in the semifinals.
